At the end of the 19th century, in addition to hydropower, piston steam engines and steam turbines were used in Switzerland as a source of electricity.

In addition to large generators, the collection also contains compact steam dynamos that used to provide lighting and signaling on steamboats. These are small but historically extremely valuable machines.

Their "offspring" - huge multi-stage steam turbines in the nuclear power stations - today produce over 40% of the electricity needed in Switzerland.
