The Swiss Steam Centre has a number of smaller steam turbines of different origins.
Parallel to the piston steam engine begins the history of the steam turbine. In 1551, the Ottoman scholar Taqi al-Din first described a steam turbine as a drive for a spit.
The first usable steam turbines was developed by Carl Gustav Patrik de Laval (1883) (action principle) from Sweden and Charles Parsons (1884) (reaction principle) from England.
